New Artwork

I just finished my first work since moving back to Long Island. I am facinated by the line between "women's work" and more "legitimate" forms of art making. My partner is a quilter/knitter and an all around crafty guy. He has turned me on to the history of fiber art and the myriad of forms it takes. I have really been into embroidery and trying to adapt it to how I make things. I have always been partial to redwork a form of embroidery popular for the past couple of hundred years. I think I am going to call the new series "Cum Rags". I know, I'm a classy gurl...

Bad Democrat..or Eat My Ranty Goodness...

Does it make me a bad Democrat if I did not much of the recent speeches at the convention? I did watch some of Al Gore's. He did mention the queers and that the current administration should not be focusing on writing discrimination into the Constitution. I am felling less than inspired by Obama/Biden. They will be infinitely better, I hope, than the McCain ticket. I have a horrible feeling that when the curtains are pulled this November, that the real racist, elitist, moralistic and generally disgusting feelings of the average United States citizen will help elect McCain as our next president. I hope I am wrong though. Part of me thinks I should take the not so subtle hint and move. I get it America, you can't hack my hippy ways or respect my equality...fine...the UK likes queer people and social workers find jobs there. The other part of me, the little boy perhaps, wants to stay and fight and give a big fuck you to the man and demand my rights, and the rights of others human and non-human and fight against the oppressive system we live in. I guess if I move to Canada or the UK, I will still be moving to a patriarchal, racist, speciesist, sexist, homophobic and every other ic or ist that you can think of society...welcome to world culture...were's my Starbucks?

Twitter

Holy crap...I think I just got sucked in.

Do you all know about this Twitter thingy? If you want to know what everyone in your life or those you admire (or hate) are doing all day, here is your chance! Good times.

Ok.....Now what?

I have been out of the loop for awhile. I know---I suck.

I am finally feeling like I am done moving from my beloved Brooklyn to my new, less struggly existence on Long Island, NY. I used to live on "strong-island" back in the day with my girl Katie. I have been going to the shore a lot, picking up sea glass, riding my bicycle, and generally loving the less hectic life I am leading. I scored my first social work job post masters and I am loving it. I have yet to seriously plug into the LGBT community here. NYC is to super expensive for most everyone, especially those who society thinks less of and doesn't afford equal rights. Not bitter though. I have seen a trend in the five years since I moved to the area of queer folks moving out to Long Island because it is cheaper. The LGBT Center in Bay Shore is planning on expanding its physical space by seven times in the next two years. All of this makes me believe that this is a great time to be on Long Island and plug into what community we have here. I am not going to argue if there is a community at all. Sure we have queens out on Fire Island partying in their mega-mansion summer homes. These plus a few drag queens at Cherry Grove does not constitute a community... The same complaint I had about my community is true here, we really don't have one. Movement? Not so much. If there was, I don't think it would be acceptable to have two candidates for president that do not believe in our equality.

On a similar and more exciting note, I am going to a vegan LGBT potluck at the local LGBT Center. I have high hopes that this will not suck. Queer vegans....whohoo!

Speaking of kickass vegans...Have you checked out my favorite podcast Vegan Freak Radio? They are swell.

More artwork and photos to come. I have yet to get back into the swing of making stuff since I have moved. It feels like I am just about to have an art frenzy...
