Transgender Basics

From The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York City

"Transgender Basics
by Rosa Juel Nordentoft

Transgender Basics is a 20 minute educational film on the concepts of gender and transgender people.

Two providers from the Gender Identity Project discuss basic concepts of gender - sex, identity and gender roles - as three transgender community members share their personal experiences of being trans and genderqueer.

The film targets service providers and others working with the LGBT community, but it also provides a fascinating glimpse into gender and identity for the general public."

Check out the film on The Center's website. I am interning with The Center for school right now. I know the kick ass creator of this project and highly recommend it. It explains a lot and is good for those who do not have a solid background on gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or for those who want to know about the trans experience.

Transgender CNN Segment

This is an old CNN news report that I love. It really explains what transgender is in a basic way and does it in a humane and respectful way. Who knew a major news outlet could do that?

Die Mommy Die

So this weekend I went with the love of my life to see Die Mommy Die. Charles Busch was captivating. The cast was great. The show was pure camp. I cannot say enough good things about it. So great!! Check out some more about the show.

If you are in NYC this is the play you should see. For all you New Yorkers who are too cool and can't be bothered with it, your loss.

It is like a big sexy gay-bomb going off and spraying the crowd with queerness...

Postcards From the Edge December 1st, 2007, NYC

So I went to the Visual AIDS Postcards From the Edge show today. AMAZING. There were so many great artist represented at the event. Over 1600 individual works on the walls. We arrived shortly after it opened for sales and found that my piece had sold already. What a great event and cause. I do like to be in places where art contributes to something besides bank accounts and enlarged egos. Good Times.

World AIDS Day

So here I sit typing away in the first moments of World AIDS day 2007. I am struck by the fact that HIV/AIDS is talked so much about in terms of statistics and numbers and rarely has a human face presented. Each one of those percentage points represents someone. A person with friends, a family, and feelings. My anger about how this epidemic is being handled has lead to activsm and has contributed hugely to me chosing to go back to school for a degree in social work. I hope that everyone reading this will do something beautiful today so that we all can put a little bit of ourselves out there into the world and diminish the ugliness all around us...
