Creativity

A run down of changes in my life
a new little man has come to live with us.

We moved.

I lost some weight.

Not as much as Miss Faith did in two shakes of a paintbrush.

and yup I am still

I am trying to be more creative and produce some dirty drawings. Feels like a good day to start.

And I'm Back....

So I am using my spankin' new puter. I have been out of the loop for a few thanks to my old desktop falling down and breaking its hip. Tax return = new laptop. I took the photo with it....fancy huh?

I am wondering if the blogging thing is done for me. I am in a less creative space these days. I have been concentrating on being a social worker and less on being an artist. It doesn't help that I moved and lost my bitch'n studio space... I find it difficult to even start something and have been wondering lately if I have anything to say...

A New Era?

I am finding myself being more action orientated lately. The whole Obama-y last couple of weeks has made me feel I have to do more...be more...make my mark. I have been really bad about documenting this refocusing. Art has taken a backseat to life. I will be working on some new stuff soon. I have been going through a time of absorbing the world around me. Soon I know I will be producing again. It is my cycle...

In the time in between here are a couple of photos I have taken in the past little while...

Margaret Cho...Radio City Music Hall, NYC...10-4-2008

Sometimes life gets a bit surreal. It really does not seem possible that I hung out with Margaret Cho backstage (and after the show), when she came to NYC with her Beautiful Tour. The show was amazing. Margaret was beyond gracious and engaging. I cannot say enough about how wonderful she is. Even the people around her were really fun to be around and not the least bit pretentious. What more could a gay man want than to hang with Margaret Cho, the ultimate fag-hag and have an all access pass to Radio City Music Hall the night of her sold out performance? I still can't believe it happened...

Just in case you are unsure...
In the photo is Jack(the love of my life), Magaret, and Me, QoP cheesing really hard.

Something New...

So I recently passed an exam that makes me a licenced social worker...

Doesn't really change my work much. It just means I have more time to work on art and not study for a test. I hope you enjoy the results!

New Artwork

I just finished my first work since moving back to Long Island. I am facinated by the line between "women's work" and more "legitimate" forms of art making. My partner is a quilter/knitter and an all around crafty guy. He has turned me on to the history of fiber art and the myriad of forms it takes. I have really been into embroidery and trying to adapt it to how I make things. I have always been partial to redwork a form of embroidery popular for the past couple of hundred years. I think I am going to call the new series "Cum Rags". I know, I'm a classy gurl...

Bad Democrat..or Eat My Ranty Goodness...

Does it make me a bad Democrat if I did not much of the recent speeches at the convention? I did watch some of Al Gore's. He did mention the queers and that the current administration should not be focusing on writing discrimination into the Constitution. I am felling less than inspired by Obama/Biden. They will be infinitely better, I hope, than the McCain ticket. I have a horrible feeling that when the curtains are pulled this November, that the real racist, elitist, moralistic and generally disgusting feelings of the average United States citizen will help elect McCain as our next president. I hope I am wrong though. Part of me thinks I should take the not so subtle hint and move. I get it America, you can't hack my hippy ways or respect my equality...fine...the UK likes queer people and social workers find jobs there. The other part of me, the little boy perhaps, wants to stay and fight and give a big fuck you to the man and demand my rights, and the rights of others human and non-human and fight against the oppressive system we live in. I guess if I move to Canada or the UK, I will still be moving to a patriarchal, racist, speciesist, sexist, homophobic and every other ic or ist that you can think of society...welcome to world culture...were's my Starbucks?

Twitter

Holy crap...I think I just got sucked in.

Do you all know about this Twitter thingy? If you want to know what everyone in your life or those you admire (or hate) are doing all day, here is your chance! Good times.

Ok.....Now what?

I have been out of the loop for awhile. I know---I suck.

I am finally feeling like I am done moving from my beloved Brooklyn to my new, less struggly existence on Long Island, NY. I used to live on "strong-island" back in the day with my girl Katie. I have been going to the shore a lot, picking up sea glass, riding my bicycle, and generally loving the less hectic life I am leading. I scored my first social work job post masters and I am loving it. I have yet to seriously plug into the LGBT community here. NYC is to super expensive for most everyone, especially those who society thinks less of and doesn't afford equal rights. Not bitter though. I have seen a trend in the five years since I moved to the area of queer folks moving out to Long Island because it is cheaper. The LGBT Center in Bay Shore is planning on expanding its physical space by seven times in the next two years. All of this makes me believe that this is a great time to be on Long Island and plug into what community we have here. I am not going to argue if there is a community at all. Sure we have queens out on Fire Island partying in their mega-mansion summer homes. These plus a few drag queens at Cherry Grove does not constitute a community... The same complaint I had about my community is true here, we really don't have one. Movement? Not so much. If there was, I don't think it would be acceptable to have two candidates for president that do not believe in our equality.

On a similar and more exciting note, I am going to a vegan LGBT potluck at the local LGBT Center. I have high hopes that this will not suck. Queer vegans....whohoo!

Speaking of kickass vegans...Have you checked out my favorite podcast Vegan Freak Radio? They are swell.

More artwork and photos to come. I have yet to get back into the swing of making stuff since I have moved. It feels like I am just about to have an art frenzy...

Feast of Fools

I cannot say how great this show was. I grew up in Topeka, Kansas and I know the Westboro Baptist Church very well. You won't find me giving there links here. The Feast of Fools podcast had an interview with Shirley Phelps, the daughter of Fred Phelps. The church's anti gay rhetoric is legendary and scary as hell. (Imagine signs that say "God Hates Fags" at Matthew Shepard's funeral) I thought that this interview amazingly well done. I was a bit shocked by how much respect I felt for Shirley as she outlined her argument. We have huge differences in opinion, obviously. I can respect her for saying what she believes instead of so many in the world... cough Hillary Clinton...cough Obama.... that say they support equal rights for queer people while they give us options like civil unions. Seperate but equal much? At least she is consistent in her hate for the gays...Check out the Feast of Fools interview with Shirley Phelps...you won't be disappointed.

Transgender Basics

From The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York City

"Transgender Basics
by Rosa Juel Nordentoft

Transgender Basics is a 20 minute educational film on the concepts of gender and transgender people.

Two providers from the Gender Identity Project discuss basic concepts of gender - sex, identity and gender roles - as three transgender community members share their personal experiences of being trans and genderqueer.

The film targets service providers and others working with the LGBT community, but it also provides a fascinating glimpse into gender and identity for the general public."

Check out the film on The Center's website. I am interning with The Center for school right now. I know the kick ass creator of this project and highly recommend it. It explains a lot and is good for those who do not have a solid background on gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or for those who want to know about the trans experience.

Transgender CNN Segment

This is an old CNN news report that I love. It really explains what transgender is in a basic way and does it in a humane and respectful way. Who knew a major news outlet could do that?

Check it out here

Die Mommy Die

So this weekend I went with the love of my life to see Die Mommy Die. Charles Busch was captivating. The cast was great. The show was pure camp. I cannot say enough good things about it. So great!! Check out some more about the show.

If you are in NYC this is the play you should see. For all you New Yorkers who are too cool and can't be bothered with it, your loss.

It is like a big sexy gay-bomb going off and spraying the crowd with queerness...

Postcards From the Edge December 1st, 2007, NYC

So I went to the Visual AIDS Postcards From the Edge show today. AMAZING. There were so many great artist represented at the event. Over 1600 individual works on the walls. We arrived shortly after it opened for sales and found that my piece had sold already. What a great event and cause. I do like to be in places where art contributes to something besides bank accounts and enlarged egos. Good Times.
